I believe my passion for history began in 1970, while painting historical scenes for Walt Disney’s Hall of Presidents. During that period, I was having a conversation with artist Herb Ryman, telling him of my interest in Mexico’s Mesoamerican culture. He told me that was good, and that I should also visit Spain and learn of my Spanish heritage as well. The following year, after having completed the Disney project, my wife and I traveled to Madrid where we visited the studio museum of Spanish artist, Joaquin Sorolla and also the Museo del Prado as Herb had recommended.  

Yo creo que mi pasión por la historia empezó en 1970, cuando pintaba escenas históricas para la Sala de Presidentes de Walt Disney. Durante ese entonces, yo estaba teniendo una conversación con el artista Herb Ryman, diciéndole de mi interés por la cultura mesoamericana. Me dijo que estaba bien, y que debía visitar España y aprender de mi patrimonio español. El año siguiente, después de haber terminado el proyecto Disney, mi esposa y yo viajamos a Madrid, donde visitamos el museo estudio del pintor español Joaquín Sorolla, y también el Museo del Prado que Herb había recomendado.

In 1975, my travel interests were further invigorated when I was off to explore the interior of Mexico with my artist friend and owner of Goez Art Studio Gallery, José (Joe) Gonzalez. On the following year, because of the art exhibit of my trip to Mexico at Goez Art Gallery, I was hired once again by Disney to work on the Mexico Pavilion show ride in EPCOT Center, Orlando, Florida.

En el año 1975, mis intereses fueron fortalecido cuando salí a explorar el interior de México con mi amigo el artista y dueño de Taller de Arte Galería Goez, José (Joe) González. En el año siguiente, debido a la exhibición de mis obras de arte sobre mi viaje a México, en Galería de Arte Goez, fui contratado una vez más por Disney para trabajar en el Pabellón México show ride en EPCOT Center, Orlando, Florida.

Since then, I have taken many trips to Mexico, climbing ancient pyramids in Michoacan, Yucatan, Oaxaca, and Mexico City as well as visiting the many museums and admiring the inspiring murals of the Conquest of Mexico by master painters like González Camarena, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Diego Rivera to name a few.

Desde entonces, he tomado muchos viajes a México, escalando antiguas pirámides en Michoacán, Yucatán, Oaxaca, y la Ciudad de México, así como visitando los numerosos museos y admirando los murales de La Conquista de México por pintores maestros como González Camarena, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Diego Rivera por nombrar a unos cuantos.

Recently, I have dedicated myself to writing and illustrating the life story of the last warrior king of the Tenochtitlán, Cuauhtémoc. In my research of the Spanish conquistadors, I came across the book written by Harry Kelsey Juan Rodíguez Cabrillo where he describes Cabrillo fighting alongside Cortés in the conquest of Mexico. Most important Kelsey breaks the myth that Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo was Portuguese instead, Kelsey states that Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo was a Spaniard born in Spain, probably in Sevilla.

Recientemente, me he dedicado a escribir e ilustrar la historia de la vida del último rey guerrero de la Tenochtitlán, "Cuauhtémoc." En mi investigación de los conquistadores españoles, me encontré con el libro escrito por Harry Kelsey Juan Rodíguez Cabrillo donde se describe Cabrillo luchando junto a Cortés en la conquista de México. Lo más importante de esto es que Kelsey rompe el mito de que Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo fue portugués. Kelsey indica que Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo fue un español nacido en España, probablemente en la ciudad de Sevilla.

Researching further, I discovered another noteworthy historical character from Sevilla, the Dominican Friar, Bartolomé de las Casas, who served as chaplain under Cortés during the conquest. Later he went on to write the most well known, A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies and Historia de Las Indias, chronicle of the first decades of colonization of the West Indies.

Siguiendo mis investigaciones, descubrí otro notable personaje histórico de Sevilla, el fraile dominico Bartolomé de las Casas, quien se desempeñó como capellán de Cortés durante la conquista. Más tarde pasó a escribir las más famosas, Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias, e Historia General de las Indias, que hacen una crónica de la primeras décadas de la colonización de las Indias Occidentales.

And so, my wife and I decided to return to Spain, this time to Andalusia with the hope that I might more fully understand the conquest of Mexico from a 16^th century Spanish perspective.

Entonces, mi esposa y yo decidimos volver a España, esta vez a Andalucía, con la esperanza de poder comprender más cabalmente la conquista de México desde la perspectiva española del siglo XVI.

My visit to the General Archives of the Indies in Seville, Spain, strengthened my interest in the Spanish expeditions to North America from the 16th to the 18th century. This will be part of my February article.

Mi visita al Archivo General de Indias en Sevilla, España, reforzó mi interés a las expediciones españolas a Norteamérica del siglo XVI hasta el siglo XVIII. Esto será parte de mi artículo de febrero.
